Liberty County Public Safety Director Mike Hodges said more than 20 children were riding the bus when it crashed early Tuesday during its morning pick-up route.

5-year-old girl killed, multiple children injured in school bus crash

It was a single-vehicle crash, troopers said. Investigators said the Liberty County school bus lost control, ran off the road, entered a ditch and hit a tree.

The crash happened on a foggy morning just before 7 a.m. as the bus was gathering Taylors Creek Elementary School students in tiny Gum Branch, a city of fewer than 300 residents that backs onto a large military community about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Savannah.
