9 Puerto Ricans killed in final flight of 60-year-old C-130
The plane was more than 60 years old, said Isabelo Rivera, Adjutant General of Puerto Rico's National Guard. Belonging to the 156th Air Wing, it was used to rescue U.S. citizens stranded in the British Virgin Islands following Hurricane Irma and ferry supplies to the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria last year.

Puerto Rico National Guard spokesman Maj. Paul Dahlen told The Associated Press that all those aboard were Puerto Ricans who had recently left the U.S. territory for a mission on the U.S. mainland. He said initial information indicated there were five to nine people aboard the plane, which was heading to Arizona.

To honor these men who died, as well as local service members, a memorial service will be held this Saturday, May 12, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Port Wentworth Festival Grounds, located at Barnsley Road and Cantyre Street.
