The call came in to police at 8:23 p.m. of the accident near the intersection of Enterprise Avenue and Wright Street. A 34-year-old male, driving a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria and traveling south on Enterprise, hit a 44-year-old male pedestrian in a wheelchair.
Pedestrian death underscores need for streetlights and sidewalks
Makakilo Neighborhood Board chairperson Evelyn Souza said the accident underscores how dark and dangerous Enterprise Avenue can be when the sun goes down."It's very precarious down there. Either you can't be seen or you don't see anybody else. Unfortunately, this gentleman was in a wheelchair. I would imagine the vantage point for the police officer was not at the very best," she said."Ever since the Navy gave up this property, there hasn't been any improvements out here at all. We haven't been keeping up with any of the utilities out here. We have no streetlights along here. There's no sidewalks," said Charles Patterson of property management company Cloudbreak Communities LLC.
Friends identify wheelchair bound accident victim
Friends of his said Thomas Davis would ride his wheelchair on Enterprise Avenue in Kalaeloa to get to and from the shelter that he had recently moved into. "He was very nice. Very friendly. He loved kids," Paul Chapman said.Chapman leads a Bible study Davis attended for the past year. The group meets Wednesday night's in a Starbucks in Kapolei. Chapman said Davis was deaf."He would attend our Bible study and whenever we were talking we had to make sure that he could see our lips so he could follow along in the conversation," he said.Davis suffered from arthritis. He was in his wheelchair Friday night when he was struck by a police car on Enterprise Avenue. Police said he was in a traffic lane. There are no streetlights or sidewalks where the accident happened.
HPD officer under investigation for crash that killed a man in a wheelchair
"The officer immediately stopped his vehicle and rendered aid to the man," says Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha.
The man was taken to Queens Medical Center West Oahu, where he died.
The officer is is now on administrative leave.
Investigators will interview witnesses, including the two teens in the car, and analyze evidence to see if the officer was distracted or just couldn't see the man.
Davis was taken to Queen’s Medical Center West Oahu in critical condition, where he later died. The officer, who was transporting two juveniles at the time, was placed on administrative leave pending a negligent homicide investigation.
