9-year-old killed after possible brake failure in truck crash, Hawaii officials say

Police suspect that brake failure caused the crash, which occurred at around 3:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Hawaii Police Department.

There were at total of five occupants within the truck at the time of the collision and an additional three occupants within the bed of the pickup truck. All the vehicle’s occupants sustained injuries from the collision and were transported to Hilo Medical Center for treatment and further evaluation.

1-05-22 (Update) Police Identify Child Killed in Mauna Kea Collision; Investigation Continues

The Hawaii Police Department is continuing their investigation into the tragic traffic collision on Mauna Kea Access Road that took place on January 1, 2022, killing a nine-year-old girl and injuring seven people.

The girl has been identified as Kelsirose Adelka of Kailua-Kona. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

Police ID girl, 9, killed in Maunakea crash

Adelka was riding inside a 2018 Toyota Tacoma traveling west on the steep summit road when the vehicle appears to have lost control after the brakes did not respond, according to police. The four-door pickup truck then crossed the roadway and went off the left shoulder traveling approximately 100 yards before falling into a ravine.
