Man dies in pedestrian crash on Big Island

A male pedestrian died after he was hit by a pickup truck early Sunday in Waimea, Big Island police said. This is the first traffic fatality on the Big Island this year. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was taken to the Kona Community Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

Victim in fatal pedestrian accident on Big Island identified

A man who was killed in a pedestrian accident early Sunday has been identified, Big Island police said. Big Island police are trying to determine the identity of a man killed early Sunday when a pick-up truck veered across the roadway in Waimea and hit him as he was walking along the shoulder. Police said the Kamuela man was walking along the shoulder of Kawaihae Road in Waimea when a pickup truck veered across the roadway and hit him. The driver of the truck, 27-year-old BertJim Badua of Kapaau, was arrested for first-degree negligent homicide and released pending investigation. An autopsy on Wednesday determined that 38-year-old Jacob Freebairn died from injuries sustained in the accident.
