The Maui Police Department is reporting the island’s first traffic fatality of the year.
Maui Man Dies in Pukalani Rollover Crash
Police say Vasquez was driving a gray Ford multi-purpose vehicle and was headed mauka on the highway when he lost control of the vehicle. According to police reports, the vehicle crossed left of the center line and rolled over.
Unrestrained Driver Dies, Belted Passenger Survives Pukalani Crash
Near the intersection of Aeloa Road, Vasquez (the driver) apparently lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the center median and rolled over.
Jose Vasquez Jr. and a 22-year-old passenger were riding it high speed on Old Haleakala Highway when Vasquez lost control of the vehicle and it rolled. Vasquez was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. The passenger suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt. The crash occured around 7:30 p.m.
