20-year-old city councilman dies after car wreck in Idaho

Fernandez was a 19-year-old freshman at the College of Idaho when he was elected in 2015 to the four-member Wilder City Council, the newspaper said. He decided to run for the council just three days before the election. His win made national headlines and placed him on the state's first all-Latino city council.

Fernandez, 20, was traveling west on state Highway 19 when his car crossed the center line and struck the side of the tractor-trailer driven by Richard Norris, 71, of Nampa, authorities said. The collision occurred about 3:30 p.m., and both lanes were still blocked as of press time Friday night.
