Three people injured in a two-car crash Tuesday morning south of Mascoutah were hospitalized in critical condition, according to the Illinois State Police.

Two people were airlifted to the hospital after a multi-vehicle wreck in St. Clair County, Ill. on Tuesday. According to police, two men were in a vehicle heading southbound on Ill. Route 4 near Jefferson when the driver lost control, overcorrected and slammed head-on into a car heading the opposite direction. The driver of the first vehicle and a woman driving the other car were airlifted to the hospital. The other male passenger was taken to a Belleville hospital before being transfered to a hospital in St. Louis. All three victims are in critical condition. Both cars involved sustained heavy damage, and one of the vehicles appeared to have its top cut off so a passenger could be extricated. Ill. Route 4 was closed between Jefferson and Town Hall while crews worked to clear the scene.
