Man dies in I-70 hit-and-run; police search for semi driver

Anyone with information about the accident or the hit-and-run semi is asked to call the Illinois State Police at 618-346-3990.

The Illinois State Police are asking the public for help in finding a hit-and-run semi driver accused of fleeing the scene of a fatal crash on Interstate 70 near Troy.

Westbound Interstate 70 was closed Wednesday morning in the aftermath of the accident. As of 8 a.m. accident investigators were reconstructing the crash and Illinois State Police spokesman Calvin Dye Jr. said authorities were unsure when it would reopen.

Dye said the accident, which happened at 1:50 a.m., occurred when the driver of a Chevrolet Impala swerved to the right for unknown reasons and then over-corrected to the left. The maneuver caused the driver, identified at this point only as a 20-year-old man, to come to a stop with his car sideways on the interstate.

A semi truck clipped the front of the Impala, causing it to spin several times, Dye said. Then a second semi hit the car in its passenger side door.

The impact of the second strike killed the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, and the car ended up in the ditch on the right side of the interstate. The second semi rolled over on its side just beyond the car in the ditch, spilling a full load of corn. According to police reports, the truck driver was not injured.

"The driver of the first semi did not stop and has not been located," Dye said.

Anyone with information about the accident or the hit-and-run semi is asked to call the Illinois State Police at 618-346-3990.
