The car was speeding when it crashed around 3 a.m. in the 2600 block of North Narragansett Avenue in the Montclare neighborhood, according to Major Accidents investigator Elliott Musial. The victims were in their 20s and late teens.

Three men and a woman were killed in an overnight traffic crash on the city's Northwest Side, according to authorities.

The crash happened about 3 a.m. in the 2600 block of North Narragansett Avenue in the city's Montclare neighborhood.

As of about 5 a.m., the Cook County medical examiner's office had not been notified of the deaths.

Police said five people were in a car traveling fast on Narragansett Avenue when it hit a concrete wall.

"From what we could tell nobody was wearing seatbelts," Major Accidents Investigation Unit Investigator Elliott Musial said at the scene Thursday morning.

The area is known to police as one where drag racing sometimes occurs and police are going to review surveillance footage to see if the car was racing, police said.

The pavement near the crash was slick - some officers walking around the scene appeared to occasionally lose their footing.

The wreck missed a collection of about 100 propane tanks near a by about five feet. It's not clear if the tanks were full.

"The vehicle came within about 5 feet of striking about a hundred propane tanks. Luckily it did not actually ignite the propane tanks, it could have been a much more serious incident in terms of (hazardous materials)," Musial said.

Police said two people died at the scene, two died at Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital and one is in critical condition at Loyola University Medical Center.

Chicago fire department officials said the dead included three men and a woman. Police couldn't confirm that information.
