A series of crashes on US Highway 24 in Huntington County, Indiana, resulted in one fatality on Friday afternoon. The fatal collision occurred just before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of US 24 and Old Fort Wayne Road, when a work van collided with a semi-trailer that was slowing to make a turn. According to the Huntington County Sheriff's Department, the work van's driver failed to notice the slowed semi-trailer and, in an attempt to avoid impact, drove off the south side of US 24. Despite emergency response efforts, the van's driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi-truck driver emerged uninjured from the incident. Law enforcement officials indicated that speed was likely a contributing factor in the crash. The incident occurred in close proximity to another collision near N 200 E and US 24, which resulted in injuries and required lane closures.

Location and Infrastructure

US Highway 24 through Huntington County serves as a crucial east-west transportation artery, connecting Fort Wayne with other major regional destinations. The intersection with Old Fort Wayne Road represents a significant junction where commercial and local traffic frequently interact. This stretch of highway typically experiences substantial commercial vehicle traffic, with multiple access points for local roads creating potential conflict zones for turning vehicles. The area where these accidents occurred spans approximately one mile of highway, highlighting the importance of maintained traffic control devices and clear sightlines for approaching vehicles, particularly given the regular presence of large commercial vehicles making turns at these intersections.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Indiana law, victims of motor vehicle accidents and their families have specific legal rights regarding compensation for damages and losses. Indiana operates under a modified comparative fault system, where parties less than 51% at fault may seek compensation. The state's statute of limitations generally allows two years from the date of the accident to file personal injury or wrongful death claims. Potential compensation may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and in cases of fatality, funeral expenses and loss of companionship. Commercial vehicle accidents often involve multiple insurance policies and potentially complex liability issues, particularly when involving corporate entities or commercial carriers. An experienced Indiana truck crash lawyer will handle all aspects of the legal claim.
