2 injured in crash involving school bus in DeKalb County

According to a release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, an initial investigation revealed that a pickup truck heading west on US 6 lost control due to slick roads.

A head-on collision between a pickup truck and a school bus occurred Thursday on US 6 in DeKalb County, Indiana, resulting in two injuries. According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, hazardous road conditions caused a westbound pickup truck to lose control and cross into oncoming traffic, colliding with a school bus. The impact forced the school bus into an embankment, while the pickup truck came to rest north of the roadway. Both occupants of the pickup truck were trapped and required extrication before being transported to a local hospital by ambulance. The school bus driver was uninjured, and fortunately, no students were aboard at the time of the crash.

Location and Infrastructure - US Highway 6 in DeKalb County is a major east-west corridor connecting Butler to Waterloo, serving as a crucial route for local traffic and school transportation. The two-lane highway experiences moderate to heavy traffic during peak hours, with particular vulnerability to weather-related hazards during Indiana's winter months. The area where the accident occurred is characterized by rural surroundings with occasional commercial development, making rapid emergency response critical for accident management.

Legal Rights and Considerations - Under Indiana Code Title 9, motor vehicle accidents involving school buses trigger specific reporting requirements and liability considerations. Indiana follows a modified comparative fault system, where parties less than 51% at fault may seek compensation for damages. Injury claims must typically be filed within two years of the accident date. Recoverable damages may include medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. The involvement of a school corporation vehicle may introduce additional procedural requirements and governmental immunity considerations. An experienced DeKalb County personal injury lawyer will handle all aspects of the legal claim.
