A severe vehicle collision on Fort Wayne's northwest side has left one person fighting for their life on Sunday, January 26, 2025. The incident occurred just after 8:30 PM at the intersection of Hillegas Road and Stalf Court, when a red passenger vehicle traveling northbound on Hillegas Road was reportedly weaving through traffic before colliding with a silver passenger car. According to Fort Wayne Police Department officials, the silver vehicle was attempting to turn right onto southbound Hillegas when the impact occurred. Emergency responders arrived at the scene promptly following multiple 911 calls. The female driver of the red vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition. The driver of the silver vehicle escaped the incident without serious injury. The Fort Wayne Police Department is actively investigating the crash, though no official determination has been made regarding potential contributing factors.

Location and Infrastructure

The collision site at Hillegas Road and Stalf Court is situated in a busy corridor of northwest Fort Wayne, serving as a major north-south thoroughfare connecting West Coliseum Boulevard to Illinois Road. This section of Hillegas Road typically experiences heavy traffic volumes, particularly during peak hours, as it provides access to several residential developments and commercial areas. The intersection with Stalf Court is controlled by standard traffic signals and features dedicated turn lanes. The area is near the Fort Wayne International Airport and several industrial parks, contributing to a mix of passenger and commercial vehicle traffic. Recent traffic studies have identified this stretch of Hillegas Road as a high-traffic corridor requiring focused safety monitoring.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Indiana Code Title 9, Article 21, motor vehicle operators have specific legal obligations regarding safe driving practices and proper lane usage. In cases involving reckless driving, Indiana law provides various remedies for injured parties, including compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. The statute of limitations for personal injury claims in Indiana is two years from the date of the accident, making timely legal consultation crucial. Insurance considerations typically involve both liability and personal injury protection coverage, with Indiana following a modified comparative fault system. This means that parties less than 51% at fault may seek compensation, though their recovery could be reduced by their percentage of fault. Multiple types of damages may be available to injured parties, including economic damages for quantifiable losses and non-economic damages for intangible impacts. An experienced Indiana personal injury lawyer will handle all aspects of the legal claim.
