An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer was seriously injured when a semi hauling a boat hit his patrol car Friday morning.
The incident happened on Washington Street at Cherry Tree Plaza, near Mitthoeffer Road.
Police officials said the semi was going through the intersection as it turned red. The semi driver tried to swerve to avoid the IMPD car, but couldn't. He hit the officer's car, then veered off the road, going over a curb and through a fence before hitting an SUV.
Officer Michael Hegg was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in serious but stable condition. He's been with the department for 17 years.
No others were injured, and the semi driver cooperated with investigators.
