Some frightening moments after a car crashed through the railing of a bridge on the city west side early Thursday morning.

At 4:48 a.m. police were called to West 16th Street over the White River bridge near Lafayette Road. The eastbound car left the roadway and crashed through a section of bridge railing.

With the car teetering over the edge of the bridge, several IMPD officers sat on the trunk of the car while rescue crews pulled the woman driver from the car.

Police say the woman was alert and talking to emergency crews as she was taken to a nearby hospital. The car was eventually pulled back off the edge of the bridge.

The right lane of eastbound 16th Street was expected to be blocked by barricades until the bridge can be repaired.
