IMPD officers say the man who ran from the scene of a deadly crash Thursday evening was brought to Eskenazi Hospital by family members.

The crash happened at the intersection of 34th and Georgetown, on the northwest side of Indianapolis, just before 6 p.m.

Police say a white truck, driven by 33-year-old William Edwards, was heading northbound on Georgetown Road when it hit the victim’s vehicle heading west on 34th street. The collision caused the victim’s car to hit two other cars, whose occupants weren’t hurt.

Police say Edwards immediately ran from the scene.

Witnesses at the scene, stated that they ran to try to help the victim, later identified as Yanpeng Wang, 25, who died in his car. They said they were trying to put the fire out from the car.

“I thought the car was going to explode, but we were able to get the fire out,” said John Davis, who works nearby. “We couldn’t get him out – both doors were crushed in.”

Davis said not being able to save the man he saw inside was the worst part.

“The man was breathing hard, it was just a bad situation. (I’m) sorry for his loss, for his family,” Davis added.

Around 8:30 p.m., police say William Edwards’ family brought him to Eskenazi Hospital after they said he was making erratic and inconsistent statements to them about what happened.

While at the hospital, police said Edwards fought and battered deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

He’ll be preliminarily charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death, possession of marijuana and battery.
