A devastating traffic accident on the near southeast side of Indianapolis claimed the life of a 4-year-old child and left multiple victims critically injured on the evening of Wednesday, May 7. The incident occurred at the intersection of Raymond Street and State Avenue around 9:15 p.m., when a Dodge Charger reportedly ran a red light at high speed, colliding with another vehicle and striking a bicyclist in the crosswalk. The young victim, identified as Alan Marcelo Salas-Garcia, was riding in a bike trailer behind his father at the time of the crash. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, with the child tragically passing away at Riley Hospital for Children around 10 p.m. The father was hospitalized in very critical condition, and another driver involved in the collision is also receiving critical medical care. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is actively investigating the incident, with officers noting the driver of the Charger fled the scene immediately after the crash.

Location and Infrastructure

The accident occurred at the critical intersection of Raymond Street and State Avenue, a busy thoroughfare in the near southeast area of Indianapolis. This intersection is known for its complex traffic patterns and multiple lanes of travel. The presence of crosswalks and traffic signals indicates a high-volume area with significant pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Nearby landmarks include residential neighborhoods and urban infrastructure typical of Indianapolis's southeast side. The location's traffic control devices, including the traffic lights at the intersection, play a crucial role in managing the flow of vehicles and ensuring pedestrian safety. Local road conditions and the intersection's design may be subject to further investigation as part of the ongoing police inquiry.

Legal Rights and Considerations

In cases of such serious traffic incidents, Indiana law provides several important legal protections for victims and their families. Potential legal actions may include personal injury claims, wrongful death suits, and claims for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. The statute of limitations for personal injury claims in Indiana is typically two years from the date of the incident, while wrongful death claims have a similar time frame. Compensation may cover medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost income, and non-economic damages. Victims or their families should consult with a qualified personal injury attorney to understand their specific legal rights. Insurance considerations will likely involve multiple parties, including auto insurance and potential uninsured motorist coverage.
