Man seriously hurt in fatal crash crawls from wreckage 3 days later

The sport utility vehicle went down an embankment, slammed into a tree head-on and instantly killed Reed, the front-seat passenger.

The vehicle was well off the road, and not visible, police said.

Due to Bell’s injuries to his legs, he wasn’t able to leave the vehicle and crawl back to the road until Tuesday night.

Police found Nikki K. Reed, 37, Seymour, inside the SUV, which was well off the roadway and not visible from the road. Reed, who was found in the passenger seat, had died from injuries she’d suffered in the wreck.

Indiana State Police said the couple each had a cell phone. When police arrived to meet Bell, he had his on him. Now Reed's family and friends just want to know why he didn’t call 911.

Police said Bell lied to Trooper Rick Hewitt who responded to the call about how he sustained his injuries. Bell did not initially tell officers that he had been in a crash or that Reed was dead inside the vehicle, police said.
