A University of Northern Iowa student has been identified as the person killed over the weekend after being hit by a vehicle while walking on Highway 20.

Sheriff's deputies arrested a man for drunk driving following a crash that killed a pedestrian in Dubuque County early Sunday morning.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. near Farley. Law officers say 24-year-old Alex Hannan was merging onto Highway 20 when he hit the pedestrian later identified as Dawson Besler, 21, a student at the University of Northern Iowa.. Hannan is in the Dubuque County Jail for Operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Traffic was backed up for more than three hours as crews investigated the crash.
