“All the individuals were able to make it safely to shore; however, they soon realized Mr. Varnado was not with them,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “After a brief search, he was located underwater and pulled to the shore at the slipway.”
Rodney Varnado, of Bogalusa, was driving a 12-foot flat boat with five other people, three of whom were his grandsons, when the boat began taking on water and one of Varnado’s grandsons went overboard, officials said. Varnado jumped in the water and was able to return the boy to the boat, but then the boat's rocking caused the other passengers to fall overboard. The passengers made it ashore, then realized that Varnado was missing, and his body was discovered underwater after about five to 10 minutes. Attempts were made to resucitate him but were ultimately unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
