He was arrested and booked into St. James Parish jail on counts of negligent homicide, first-offense DWI, reckless operation, hit-and-run driving, and a traffic-light violation.

According to reports, impairment on Newton's part is suspected, and he submitted to a toxicology test.
A Vacherie woman died Sunday morning in St. James Parish after a man crashed his vehicle into her car and then fled on foot. Corey Newton, 24, was arrested on counts including DWI. Brittany Harris, 25, was traveling north on La. 3213 at 5:30 a.m. when she was hit by Newton who allegedly had run a red light. Harris’ car exited the roadway and crashed into a utility pole. She was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced deceased at the crash site. Newton was uninjured, and fled the site of the crash and fled to nearby woods. Police suspect he was under the influence of alcohol.
