Metairie man arrested after motorcyclist killed Thursday night
A 26-year-old man has been arrested after his SUV struck and killed a motorcyclist Thursday night in Metairie, authorities said. The driver, identified as Darwin Ferrera, is accused of driving while intoxicated.
According to a preliminary report from JPSO, the wreck happened around 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Clearview Parkway and South I-10 Service Road.
Ferrera of Metairie was traveling north on Clearview Parkway, and when he was turning left onto the service road Ferrara's Ford Expedition collided with the Suzuki motorcycle, a traffic investigator found.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office identified the victim as Ewin Zelaya. He was pronounced dead at East Jefferson General Hospital.
State Trooper Carla Billiot witnessed the crash, according to the JPSO statement released Friday morning. The report said she saw Ferrera trying to flee the scene, but he couldn't because the motorcycle was wedged under his SUV.
Ferrera was booked with charges of vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and no driver's license.
JPSO said Ferrera had four passengers in his SUV, including three children. He also was cited for three child restraint violations.
