New Orleans Police arrested the driver they say is responsible for a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy who was on his way to school Monday morning in Gentilly. The NOPD announced shortly after 1 p.m. that the car suspected in the incident, a dark gray Honda Crosstour, had been located in the 1600 block of Charlton Drive in Gentilly. About 30 minutes later, an arrest was announced but no further details were provided. Detectives and crime lab technicians were scouring the car for evidence that it was involved in the hit-and-run, which took place just after 7 a.m. near the intersection of Paris Avenue and Lafreniere Street in Gentilly. It was there, a relative confirmed, that 6-year-old Shaud Wilson was fatally injured, struck by a car as he attempted to cross Paris Avenue with three siblings. The children were en route to their school bus stop as their mother watched from the Paris Avenue neutral ground. Wilson's 9-year-old sister Shanaya also was struck by the car, but suffered only minor injuries to an ear. A cousin said the younger brother sustained a broken left leg and severe head injury, and never regained consciousness. Gibson said the driver remained in the car, watching the scene for more than a minute, before speeding away down Paris Avenue. Police did not immediately identify the arrested driver or say what charges he could face. Shaud Wilson was a first-grade student at Akili Academy of New Orleans. A communications manager for Crescent City Schools, said grief counselors had been dispatched to the academy and would remain on-site this week to provide support for students and staff. A letter was being sent home to families of the school Monday afternoon.
