Toby Pennels, legislative candidate, dies from motorcycle crash injuries

A state Senate candidate who crashed his motorcycle last month has died. The 55-year-old Republican from Casco was running against Democrat Bill Diamond for Senate District 26, which includes Casco, Baldwin, Frye Island, Raymond and Standish. Police said Pennels suffered major chest and shoulder injuries after he lost control of his motorcycle in Sandy River Plantation in early August.

An accomplished combat veteran and Republican candidate for the Maine Senate died early Thursday morning from injuries he suffered Aug. 3 in a motorcycle accident near Rangeley.
Pennel's name was withdrawn from the ballot after the accident, and parties cannot replace candidates who are withdrawn from the race after July 14. Dolby Funeral Chapel in Windham, which is handling the funeral arrangements, confirmed his death.
