A 63-year-old Snow Hill man was killed Wednesday when he crashed his car into an oncoming vehicle, police said.

It happened at about 6:30 p.m. According to the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, Eltee Thomas Shockley Jr., was driving a 2005 Hyundai northbound on Lewis Road. He lost control of his vehicle while going around a curve in the road and struck an oncoming 2011 Chevrolet Traverse sideways. Shockley was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said the passengers of the Chevrolet, a Berlin-area mother with two young children secured in child safety seats, suffered minor injuries. All were treated at Peninsula Regional Medical Center and released.

Authorities had Lewis Road closed for five hours. The sheriff’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash. Shockley’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy and toxicology test.

Excessive speed may have been an issue for the driver of the Hyundai, according to a spokesman for the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office.

He said a preliminary investigation shows the speed of the Hyundai caused Shockley’s car to fishtail. The driver’s-side door struck the left-front of the Chevrolet, which ended up in a ditch on the side of the road.
