A student pilot practicing landings at Mansfield Airport crash-landed on Saturday morning, causing significant damage to the plane.

Mansfield police say the student was flying a 2003 Cessna C-172S, and came in too low to the runway.

The plane touched down about 180 yards away from where it was supposed to land; its wheels clipped a snow bank, and the landing gear snapped as it hit the runway.

Officials say the plane tipped onto its right wing tip and went into a controlled skid off the runway.

The pilot, who was not identified, walked away uninjured, but the plane sustained about $45,000 in damage.

The FAA is investigating.
