Rhode Island man dies in Massachusetts crash

The Northwestern district attorney's office said in a statement that the 57-year-old Arruda was driving west when his car apparently crossed the double-yellow center line and struck the back driver's side of an SUV driven by a Hadley man.

A 57-year-old Rhode Island man was killed in a two-car crash on Route 9 in Hadley Thursday morning.

Joseph A. Arruda, of Bristol, R.I., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred near the Shell gasoline station at 73 Russell St. about 9:40 a.m., according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Arruda was westbound in a Mercedes sedan when his vehicle apparently crossed the double-yellow center line and struck the back driver’s side of a Honda sport utility vehicle driven by a Hadley man, according to the district attorney’s office.

First Assistant District Attorney Steven E. Gagne said the collision sheared off a rear wheel section of the Honda. Arruda’s vehicle eventually came to rest on the south side of the road.

The driver of the Honda SUV did not appear have any serious injuries and was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Gagne said. The district attorney’s office declined to release the name of the Hadley man because no citations or criminal charges are anticipated.
