1 killed when train hits Longmeadow DPW truck during Winter Storm Stella

The collision took place off Pondside Road, not far from the town's DPW garage and near the edge of the Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge.

Police and firefighters are on the scene along with Amtrak investigators and Massachusetts State Police. A police sergeant described the collision as a "tragic accident."

Cowles was a veteran employee of town’s public works department, where he was known for his infectious “get-it-done attitude,” said the director, Mario Mazza.

Warning signs ignored for decades at Longmeadow railroad crossing

Cowles death wasn't the first one to happen at this dangerous railroad crossing.  There have been seven accidents involving a train at this crossing since 1975.  Five people have been killed.
