Fire chief fatally struck by vehicle along I-94 in Michigan
They were preparing to leave when the passing vehicle lost control and struck Comstock Township Chief Edward Switalski as he stood near the rear of his rescue vehicle. The sheriff’s department says Switalski was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver who struck him was taken to a hospital with injuries.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas said the design of the highway where Switalksi was killed, a half-mile east of Sprinkle Road near the business loop at Exit 81, hasn't been determined to be a factor in the crash, "but all this points to an area notorious for accidents."

But in their shock and grief, Switalski's firefighters and others immediately began to honor the chief with a small procession from the scene. It included a patrol car, fire trucks and the ambulance carrying his body.

A service for Switalski is Wednesday at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. He worked for more than three decades at Pleasantview Fire District in suburban Chicago before becoming Comstock Township chief in 2013.
