Teens steal school van, crash through gate.
Two teenagers are accused of stealing a school district van and crashing through the locked gate at the bus facility to flee. Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday to the Walkerville Public Schools bus facility on a report of damage to the fence at the gated bus garage. A full-size district van was missing, and police determined the two suspects climbed the fence to gain access. Police tracked the van several miles and saw it stuck in snow on a seasonal road, according to a police news release. Troopers then tracked the suspects for several miles and located them hiding in a Christmas tree plantation where they were arrested. An 18-year-old male from Walkerville was taken to the Oceana County Jail pending arraignment on felony unlawfully driving away an automobile, and malicious destruction of property charges. A 16-year-old was apprehended and will be petitioned into probate court on the same charges. Deputies from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
