Football player dies in crash after homecoming dance, driver charged

(10/06/15) - A man accused of drunken driving has been charged in the death of an Upper Peninsula teen who played in his school's football game and attended a homecoming dance before he was killed in a head-on crash. Darrell Lovegrove was charged Monday with causing death while driving drunk. Ignace after the death of 17-year-old Mitch Snyder, a senior at LaSalle High School and member of a well-known local family. The Mackinac County sheriff's office says Snyder's car was hit around midnight Friday. It wasn't known if he has an attorney yet.

Teenager killed in two-vehicle accident

A vehicle driven by a 17-year-old man from Brevort Township collided head-on with another vehicle driven by a 40-year-old St. Ignace man. The teenager died as a result of the crash.

Superintendent Don Gustafson says it’s a “very sad time” in St. Ignace after the death of Mitch Snyder, a student at LaSalle High School and member of a family that’s been in the area for years. A car driven by the 17-year-old Snyder was hit early Saturday, about 15 minutes after he took his girlfriend home.

"It's just a very sad day. Not just a day, it's just a very sad time in St. Ignace," Don Gustafson, superintendent of St. Ignace schools, told The Grand Rapids Press. "The whole community is grieving." Snyder was a senior at LaSalle High School. He made eight tackles and recovered a fumble Friday in a 60-0 victory over Mancelona. A candlelight vigil was held on the football field Sunday night. "He had an infectious personality and a smile that could light up a room," Gustafson said. Lovegrove's bond was set at $1 million. It's not clear if he has an attorney yet.

Man found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in U.P. football star's crash death

A jury has found a 40-year-old man guilty of involuntary manslaughter in an alcohol-involved traffic crash that killed a 17-year-old high school football standout, according to 9 & 10 News.
