Driver crashes into pole in northeast Minneapolis, runs as passenger dies

 A motorist rammed a vehicle into a traffic signal post in the middle of the night in northeast Minneapolis and ran from the scene, where his passenger died moments later, authorities said.

The woman who died while riding in a car that crashed late at night over the weekend in northeast Minneapolis was identified Monday, and the driver who ran from the scene remains at large.   

Suspect arrested in crash that killed St. Thomas student

Minneapolis Police spokesperson Catherine Michal said the suspect was located at a residence in Wright County, then taken to North Memorial Medical Center for observation. He was arrested for suspected criminal vehicular homicide after being checked out, and then taken to the Hennepin County Jail to await official charges in the case.

Michael Laurence Campbell, 21, was booked into the Hennepin County jail on probable cause criminal vehicular homicide.

The complaint states the car was surrounded by a large field of debris, and large pieces of the overhead traffic light had broken off due to the crash's impact. The entire passenger side of the car was reportedly crushed.

Ria Patel's relatives, friends and fellow students met near the arches leading into the St. Paul campus Thursday night to share condolences.
