An 11-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was struck by a car near the intersection of Rice Street and W. Hoyt Avenue in St. Paul on Monday morning.
6th grader Bikram Phuyel suffered a severe head injury when he was struck while crossing Rice Street. According to police, he was walking to school at the time, but was not in a crosswalk. He was taken to Regions Hospital.
"They just tell us he's got blood in the brain," a family member told Fox 9. "It needs to be removed ASAP. There's no injury below the neck. Nothing broken."
According to investigators, the crash occurred after one car slowed down to allow the boy to cross and another car drove around the first vehicle. Police have yet to reveal whether or not the driver may be charged.
A school official said they encourage their student walkers to cross in marked cross-walks with stop lights, especially along busy Rice Street. There are two such spots--one just north, and one just south of Monday's accident scene.
"For a person to actually get across the street, it's literally like playing the game of Frogger," Virgil Calamese, a man who works on Rice Street, said.
