The van veered off the highway and hit the tree. The impact was so severe the front hood was concaved into a "V" and the steering wheel pushed into the rear door jam. All six passengers, employees of J. Ambrogi Foods, were trapped inside.

Two of the victims injured Tuesday in a deadly crash on Route 55 have improved from critical to stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Carlos Gonzalez, 31, and Jose Santiago, 37 — both of Bridgeton — were in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, said Cooper University Hospital spokeswoman Lori Shaffer. Two others — 25-year-old Regina Fortoso, of an unknown address, and 48-year-old Angel Rodriguez of Vineland — were still in critical condition, Shaffer said. Romulo de la Cruz, 28, of Bridgeton and 47-year-old Norma Santiago died from their injuries. New Jersey state police said de la Cruz was driving the GMC van northbound near mile marker 40 around 6 a.m. when the front driver's side tire blew out. The van left the roadway and smashed into a tree, they said. Although he was the only one in the van wearing a seatbelt, police said, de la Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene, and Santiago was flown to Cooper, where she was later pronounced.
