Three people were killed in a helicopter crash early Thursday morning in Guadalupe County between Santa Rosa and Tucumcari.
The helicopter went down in the eastern portion of the county around 2:30 a.m. The crash scene is north of Newkirk, which is east of Santa Rosa.
A pilot, paramedic and nurse were on board at the time of the crash. All were based out of Santa Fe.
Harvey Frost snapped a photo of wreckage shortly after the crash.
"Just fire. I mean, I could see the tail of the helicopter. That's how I knew it was the helicopter, but the rest of it was pretty much burned by the time I got there," Frost said.
The aircraft crashed on the T-4 Ranch. An ambulance was sent to the scene, but it returned with no patients.
"It was pretty, pretty scary, especially when I walked up on it. I've never been around a crash like that," Frost said. "Other than the tail of the helicopter that was the only thing you could actually make out. Everything else was just burned and gone. There was nothing there."
FAA authorities say the helicopter crashed in rough terrain and a cause is still unknown.
Frost said there was no severe rain or lightning in the area when the chopper crashed.
