CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A man who tried to help someone stuck in the wintry conditions was killed for his helpful actions. When Lee was taken into custody the sheriff said he still had the pistol on him. Neighbors told investigators they heard what sounded like a car stuck on an icy road and tires spinning and went down to the road.

While the authorities were being summoned, Lee allegedly brandished an automatic pistol and began shooting, prompting the Samaritans to run. A 26-year-year-old good Samaritan was being mourned Saturday, the day after he was fatally shot by a stranded driver whom he was trying to help on a snowy roadway in North Carolina, according to media reports and the victim’s loved ones. The suspect then reentered his car and allegedly ignored the commands of arriving deputies, who ordered him to exit the vehicle. Jefferson Heavner was among several people who offered to assist Marvin Jacob Lee, 27, about 5:20 p.m. One of them was struck by a bullet and fell to the ground, after which Lee approached him and shot him “numerous times,” Reid said, according to The Observer.

When he was taken into custody, the sheriff says Lee still had the pistol on him. Lee was arrested and charged with murder. Kristie Ward, a friend of the victim, said she learned of Heavner's death Friday night. She said Heavner had a child and will be missed greatly. "He was just at my house not even a month ago. He told me 'I love you sis, bye.'" Ward didn't realize she would be saying goodbye to Heavner forever.  "All he loved to do was go mudding, hunting, fishing, he was just all-around great person," Ward explained.
