NC trooper, driver killed in traffic stop crash

Trooper James Horton was responding to help his brother, Trooper John Horton, with a traffic stop when he lost control and hit the stopped patrol vehicle, which in turn struck Trooper John Horton and the detained driver on the roadside, officials said.

While nearing the scene of the traffic stop on High Shoals Church Road, James Horton lost control of his vehicle and slammed into his brother’s patrol vehicle and then hit his brother and the motorcyclist who had been stopped and detained as they stood on the side of the road, Knox said.

Trooper John Horton, a 15-year veteran assigned to Rutherford County, was taken to a Spartanburg hospital where he died of his injuries, according to the NCSHP. The detained driver, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
