North Carolina pedestrian dies after being struck by car on same road he was seriously injured on three years ago

Gary Von Lunsford, 52, was fatally struck by a vehicle Friday night as he walked southbound along Sawmills' US 321-A highway wearing dark clothing. It came less than 36 months after he was hospitalized in a coma for six weeks after a carbon copy crash in the same spot.

A North Carolina walker was hit and killed by a car on the same stretch of road he was seriously injured on during an identical accident three years ago.

He had walked to see his wife Catherine Lunsford at PD Grocery on Sawmills School Road at 8 p.m., according to News-Topic.

Walking home afterwards, he was hit from behind by a Nissan driven by 43-year-old Catherine Thompson.

With emergency vehicles blocking the highway, his wife saw the chaos as she drove home.

"I had a hunch it was him. He was still alive when I got there, and an ambulance was taking him. But then it came back. I knew then he had died," she told News-Topic.

Highway Patrol officers said Thompson has not been charged.

The tragic accident came less than three years after Lunsford's previous accident on the same slice of road which saw him suffer a traumatic brain injury.

Unable to work after the horror crash, his wife said he walked everywhere due to two driving while impaired convictions.
