Police said a car involved in a short officer chase caused a double fatal wreck in uptown Shelby on Saturday afternoon.

Police said a car involved in a short officer chase caused a double fatal wreck in uptown Shelby on Saturday afternoon.

Police said a Shelby police officer was monitoring traffic on Dixon Boulevard just after 1:00 p.m. for speeding when a 2002 Buick Lesabre passed by the officer speeding.

Chief of Police Jeffrey H. Ledford said the officer tried to pull the suspect over when the suspect made a left turn onto Marion Street in order to flee from the officer.

When the officer turned onto Marion street, the suspect pulled away. Police said when the officer tried catching up to the suspect, the pursuit was called off due to traffic.

Shortly after the chase, the suspect ran a red light at the intersection of Marion Street and Lafayette Street and struck a 2007 Ford Taurus in the passenger door.

Police said the two occupants of the Ford Taurus, later identified as Dorman Keith Pompey, 55, and Frances Parks Pompey, 55, were killed in the accident and pronounced dead on the scene.

A child was ejected from the vehicle and taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Police have not released the extent of the child's injuries.

Names of the victim are not being released until the family is notified.

The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Demetrist Lendell Roberts of Shelby and he will be charged with two counts of second degree murder, two counts of felony death By vehicle, driving while impaired, felony speed to elude arrest, driving while license revoked, and speeding.

Roberts is being held at the Cleveland County Detention Center without bond.

The Cleveland County division of the Highway Patrol and Highway Patrol Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.
