A Dobson police officer was killed in an off-duty crash Thursday night on Interstate 77. Wilmoth worked at the Surry County Sheriff's Office from June 2014 to July 2015. David Alexander Wilmouth, 23, died at the scene of the crash just before 11 p.m. between mile marker 97 and 98. Wilmouth is the nephew of Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson. Officials said Wilmoth lost control near mile marker 98 between the Mount Airy and Dobson exits off I-77. The vehicle swerved off the road, over a guardrail and came to rest after overturning several times, according to Surry County authorities. Authorities have not said what caused the crash. “During his time as a law enforcement officer, Wilmoth distinguished himself as a true public servant, always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty,” Sheriff Graham Atkinson said in a prepared statement.
