A man was seriously injured Wednesday evening after a vehicle collision in Elizabeth City, police tell NewsChannel 3.

A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle in Elizabeth City Wednesday night.
A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle in Elizabeth City Wednesday night. Capt. John Young with the Elizabeth City Police Department said the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the area of Halstead Boulevard and Peartree Road. A 2004 Mercedes Benz driven by 21-year-old Elizabeth City State University student, later identified as Tasia Foote, was traveling westbound on Halstead Boulevard when it struck a 44-year-old man, later identified as Demetrius Banks, riding a bicycle southbound on Peartree Road. Young said the Mercedez stopped in the turn lane and the victim was found several feet in front of the vehicle. It had front bumper, hood and windshield damage. The bicyclist was transported to Albemarle Hospital and later flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The driver also went to Albemarle Hospital complaining of glass in her eye and face, Young said. The bicyclist is in the ICU in Norfolk and currently on a ventilator with multiple fractures to both legs as well as head trauma.
