According to state troopers, a green Chevy truck was headed west on N.C. 97, and a white Ford Focus was traveling east. When one of the drivers attempted to pass another car on a double yellow line, the two collided head-on.

Berganza-Romero was in the oncoming lane attempting to pass another vehicle on N.C. 97 near its intersection with Rocky Cross Road. Batchelor said the stretch of state highway was a no-passing zone marked with double yellow lines.
