Two dead after trains crash into car in Lorain County

Two people are dead after two trains collided with a car crossing the railroad tracks on Route 83 Thursday, the Ohio Highway Patrol confirmed.

Dan Draeger said he was shocked when the car in front of him drove through the railroad crossing at the intersection of Avon Belden Road (state Route 83) and Capel Road about 5:10 p.m. Thursday.

UPDATE: Alert system working in deadly train crash

Officials determined all railroad crossing equipment was functioning when a vehicle was hit by two trains in Lorain County at state Route 83 and Capel Road, near Grafton.
Details on the collision are limited, but so far it has been reported that a Chevrolet Malibu containing a man and a woman was first hit by a westbound train on the tracks that cross Route 83, before being hit yet again by an eastbound train. Driver Jawad Al-Nimer slowed down but went through the crossing despite the gates being down, lights flashing, and as a train was approaching. According to a witness, Al-Nimer swerved but the Malibu was struck by the train, then struck again by another, eastbound train. Both the driver and his passenger, Mufideh Al-Nimer, 78, were killed.
