Bicyclist from Florida Struck and Killed by Car in Oklahoma

A bicyclist from Florida was killed and another was injured when they were struck by a car on Highway 152 in western Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Thursday that 25-year-old Patrick Wanninkhof of Key Biscayne, Florida, was dead at the scene of the accident and 22-year-old Bridget Anderson of Port Orange, Florida, was hospitalized in Oklahoma City in stable condition.

An OHP report says the two were westbound on the highway when they were struck by a westbound car. The report says the driver of the car said she was distracted by looking at her phone when she crashed into the bicyclists.

A New York high school teacher leading a group of bicyclists with a Philadelphia-based nonprofit on a cross-country trip was struck and killed by a driver who was looking at her phone, according to police. Bike & Build, based in Manayunk, organizes cross-country bicycle trips which benefit affordable housing groups. According to the organization'€™s Facebook page, Wanninkhof joined the nonprofit after serving for three years with Teach for America. Anderson was hospitalized in Oklahoma City in stable condition. There was no immediate word on any charges against the driver.

Woman charged in crash that killed cross-country bicyclist

The Oklahoman (http://bit.ly/1OncnyZ ) reports that 34-year-old Sarah Morris was charged Thursday. Prosecutors say Morris struck and killed 25-year-old Patrick Wanninkhof as he was riding on State Highway 152 in July. The New York high school teacher was cycling with about two dozen others for the nonprofit Bike and Build, which sends cyclists across the country to help organizations build affordable homes for people in need. Prosecutors say Morris did not give Wanninkhof the required three feet of space while she was driving and failed to see the cyclists in time to avoid hitting them. An attorney listed as representing Morris did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press.

“What led to me and Patrick’s incident was three notifications for a real estate app,” she said. “She must have been looking at those or something and now someone isn’t living and my life is forever changed all because of that.”
