Two men led police on a foot chase Tuesday night in Paxtang Borough after they sped away from a traffic stop and their vehicle crashed into a tree, according to police. Deon William Gilmore, 21, the passenger in the car, was arrested following the incident. Gilmore, of the 1600 block of Regina St., Harrisburg, was found with marijuana and a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, police said. Police have also prepared an arrest warrant for Jerell L. Tate, 21, of Harrisburg, who is the driver of the car and remains at large, Ofc. Shaun Burke confirmed Thursday. Charging documents filed by Patrick Corkle, of Paxtang Borough police, detail the traffic stop and the subsequent chase. Corkle wrote the following: He stopped a vehicle around 7:01 p.m. at S. 29th and Derry streets because of a equipment violation. When he approached the car, he said he detected a very strong odor of marijuana. Additionally, the two men in the car told Corkle they had forgot their identifications at home and asked the officer to follow them to their house “just up the street” so they could get them. Suspecting the situation might turn south, Corkle asked Tate, the driver, to turn the car off and hand him the car keys. The officer said he also removed his Taser discreetly and waited to see how Tate would react. He said he then shocked Tate with the Taser after he reached for the gearshift. Despite this, Tate sped off, and nearly crashed into oncoming traffic before the wires to the Taser became dislodged. Corkle said he then followed the vehicle as it sped on S. 26th Street. The car eventually crashed into a tree and fence, at which point Tate and Gilmore ran through an alley. Corkle said he saw Gilmore run by a garage and tried to cut him off. Gilmore then fell to the ground after crashing into a gas or propane tank and knocking a gas line loose, which required firefighters to come to the scene. Gilmore was found with the handgun, which was loaded with a magazine containing 11 bullets, Corkle said. The officer also said a bag containing 1.6 grams of marijuana was seized from Gilmore. Corkle said in charging documents that Gilmore was convicted of robbery in 2007 and was prohibited from carrying a firearm. He is charged with the following felonies: possession of a firearm when prohibited, carrying a firearm without a license, escape and flight to avoid apprehension. Other charges include tampering with physical evidence, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest. Gilmore is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail in Dauphin County Prison. His preliminary court hearing is scheduled for Monday.
