Coroner: 4 killed in crash on Pennsylvania interstate

The Lackawanna County coroner's office says the collision happened at about 1 a.m. Saturday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in South Abington Township. Coroner Timothy Rowland said three women and a man from Lackawanna County were killed. Their names were not available pending notification of next of kin. State police and the county district attorney's office are investigating.

State police in Lackawanna County say a car apparently heading north in the southbound lanes on Interstate 81 collided with a southbound car shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday in South Abington Township. Coroner Timothy Rowland identified the victims as 68-year-old Vinodchandra Patel, 30-year-old Komal Vyas, 29-year-old Shilpa Patel, and 32-year-old Ashley Wheeler. Rowland said autopsies are scheduled Sunday on the victims, all of whom are from Scranton. State police and the county district attorney's office are investigating.

Coroner: Deaths of 4 in wrong-way crash ruled homicides

The Lackawanna County coroner's office said Monday that all of the victims of the Interstate 81 crash early Saturday in South Abington Township died of multiple traumatic injuries. Coroner Timothy Rowland said all four deaths had been ruled homicides. He said none of the victims were drivers of either vehicle. State police said one of the cars was apparently heading north in the southbound lanes when it collided with a southbound car, killing four Scranton residents. the victims were identified as 68-year-old Vinodchandra Patel, 30-year-old Komal Vyas, 29-year-old Shilpa Patel, and 32-year-old Ashley Wheeler

Man charged with vehicular homicide in crash that killed 4

State police said a car apparently heading north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 collided with a southbound car early Saturday, killing four Scranton residents. The deaths of 68-year-old Vinodchandra Patel, 30-year-old Komal Vyas, 29-year-old Shilpa Patel, and 32-year-old Ashley Wheeler were ruled homicides. Manannikov is listed in fair condition at a Scranton hospital. Court documents don't list an attorney who could respond to the charges and a listed number for him couldn't be found Monday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Gennadiy Manannikov of Lake Ariel is charged with multiple counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangering and traffic-related counts.

Hundreds attend funerals for 4 of 5 interstate crash victims

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — Mourners at the funerals for four of the five victims of what authorities call a wrong-away crash on a northeastern Pennsylvania interstate say the community is devastated by their loss. The (Scranton) Times-Tribune (http://bit.ly/1PNOd4G ) reports that about 500 people from the south Asian communities of the region attended Saturday's joint funeral services at Chipak Funeral Home. Sixty-eight-year-old Vinodchandra Patel, 30-year-old Komal Vyas, 42-year-old Bhaveshkumar Patel and 29-year-old Shilpa Patel were all from India and co-workers at a Scott Township factory. They were killed and another person was injured early Jan. 23 when their vehicle was struck head-on by a car that police said was in the wrong lanes of Interstate 81. A passenger in that car was also killed and the driver is facing charges.

Four Dead in Crash on I-81 in Lackawanna County

The crash happened around 1 a.m. in the southbound lanes just past the Clarks Summit exit. The Lackawanna County Coroner says three women and one man were killed. He did not release their names, but said all the victims were from Lackawanna County.

DUI Driver in Deadly Wrong-way Crash Sent to Prison

Gennadiy Manannikov was sentenced Friday afternoon to 18 to 36 years in prison. He entered a guilty plea in July.
