Coroner IDs victim in fatal wreck with log truck

Coroner Bill Salisbury says Lawrence Phillips of Eutawville was the backseat passenger of a minivan that ran head-on into a log truck on Old State Road near Wassamassaw Swamp Bridge around 11:15 a.m.

The S.C. Highway Patrol, which was investigating the wreck, had not immediately announced any criminal charges or traffic tickets related to it.

South Carolina Highway Patrol officials said the driver of the 2006 Mack truck along with the driver and front passenger of the minivan were all wearing their seatbelts. Phillips was not.

Lawrence Phillips was riding in the backseat of a minivan that was traveling on Old State Road when the van ran head on into a log truck. Phillips was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.Two other people, driver Terri Davis, 26, and a front seat passenger, Ruby Williams, 70, were also injured. They were transported to a local medical center and the extenet of their injuries is not known. The driver of the truck, 26-year-old Tyren Washington, was not hurt.

Crashes involving trucks are more challenging than most car accident cases.  The damage and injuries are usually very serious due to the extreme force of a collision with a huge truck.
