SC authorities investigate hit-and-run at school bus stop

Authorities say they have identified a person of interest in a hit-and-run incident in which an 11-year-old student waiting at a school bus stop in Chester County was seriously injured. Local media outlets report the student was hit Tuesday morning and the driver sped off. Media outlets report a suspect was being questioned but no charges have been filed. The student attends the Chester Park Center of Literacy through Technology. Authorities said the student was taken to a local hospital then transported to a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, because of the severity of his injuries.

An 11-year-old boy saved his little sister's life by pushing her out of the path of an oncoming vehicle. He was then struck by that car and died.La'Darious Wylie was waiting for the school bus with his 7-year-old sister when a car veered toward them, WBTV-TV reports . La'Darious pushed his sister out of the way just in time."He knew to look out for her," both boy's mother Elizaberth McCrorey told ABC affiliate WSOC-TV La'Darious was then struck by the car. He died at the hospital.The driver, later identified as Michelle Johnson, 57, didn't stick around. She's now charged in the fatal hit-and-run death."I don't hate her; I just wish she had stopped," McCrorey told WSOC-TV The boy's funeral is set for Thursday afternoon.

A civic group and other local leaders have begun efforts to have a park near where La’Darious was hit named for him. CHESTER, S.C. (AP) — Some residents of a South Carolina town have proposed honoring an 11-year-old boy who saved his sister’s life after authorities say he was killed by a hit-and-run driver. Elizabeth McCrorey donated her son’s organs to help other children survive injury or illness. The Herald of Rock Hill reports the mother of 11-year-old La’Darious Wylie said he pushed his 7-year-old sister, Sha’Vonta, out of the car’s path at a school bus stop in Chester on Oct. 27. The driver of the car is charged with felony hit and run resulting in death.

The 11-year-old boy, who school officials say was a 5th grader at Chester Park Center of Literacy through Technology, was struck by the vehicle around 7:30 a.m. on Ashford Street. The boy was rushed to a hospital in Chester before being air lifted to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte.

Police say La'Darious was hit and badly injured. Family members told WBTV the children at the corner said La'Darious pushed his little sister out of the way before he was struck. "In other words he saved his sister," said Mobley. "And he ended up being the one that's where he is now." La'Darious died the next day at the hospital. Relatives are preparing for his burial on Thursday. 

Driver in hit-and-run that killed boy gets probation

Johnson drove away after hitting La'Darious Wylie in 2015 in Chester and told police she thought she'd hit a deer. She made a tearful apology to the boy's family Tuesday.
