Man who fled police on I-40 East killed in crash

A traffic stop turned into a high-speed chase, according to Lt. Bill Miller, a spokesman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol. "It does not need to escalate into a situation like we saw today," Miller said.
On Tuesday afternoon a trooper stopped Richard Stafford, 63, of Crossville, for a traffic violation on eastbound I-40. While the trooper was processing Stafford's information at her cruiser, Stafford suddenly fled, initiating a police chase with speeds up to 100 mph. Stafford drove a mile before crashing into a semi trailer truck at mile marker 295. Troopers found Stafford's body underneath the vehicle, and he was dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.  What you need to know after a serious car accident: When someone has been seriously injured in a car accident, they face the challenges of dealing with injuries, medical treatments and bills, and lost wages.
