A fatal rollover crash shut down a major road for hours.

Eastbound U.S. 290 was shut down near Johnny Morris Road after the crash at 6 p.m. Sunday. Three people were in an SUV when it rolled over.

Two people were ejected, and one died at the scene. The other was taken to the hospital with what police say are non-life threatening injuries.

There is no known condition for the driver. A police sergeant says the two people ejected probably weren’t wearing seatbelts.

“Witnesses said he was traveling at a pretty rapid rate of speed, where he lost control striking the curb. He crossed the other lanes of traffic, which he hit the south curb line and that caused the vehicle to start to roll, and two of the passengers were ejected,” said police.

This happened in an area where they are building the U.S. 290 toll road. Police say construction was not a factor.
